Please note, we moved into our current place in April. Today, we finally got all of the photos and art (including my husband’s guitars) up on the walls. I finally felt comfortable enough with the state of our house–or at least the front half of it–to share with the internet, and some of the cool space saving ideas we’ve used to maximize our minimal square footage.

I really love how things have shaped up in the living room.

Mounting the guitars was something we came up with when we were living in our old place. We’re a musical family. My husband has 2 electric and 2 acoustic guitars, plus a trombone. I have a flute. That’s a lot of musical instruments (plus equipment!) for 900 square feet. Mounting the guitars on the wall was a way of storing them that doesn’t take up storage space, but also makes for really awesome wall wart. We’ve done the same thing in the dining room:

Another recent addition that has made a huge difference in storage space is putting our pot lids on the kitchen wall. We got 2 of the Grundtal rails from IKEA and simply mounted our lids on the rails. Not only is it much easier to get to our lids, it freed up an entire shelf on our cabinets for other stuff. Plus, I think it’s pretty.

We also got a hanging pot rack for all of our pots (although we installed this when we first moved in.) Another huge space saver, it’s so much easier to find what I’m looking for and get it when it’s hanging right in front of me. I love not having to dig through cabinets anymore for pots and lids when we’re cooking, especially now that I’m pregnant and bending and digging aren’t really compatible with the belly. Another view of the pot rack:

The recliner is another recent addition. I got it because my husband has been complaining about our couch for years now, and I was looking for something that would be comfortable to sleep in should the bed get too uncomfortable to facilitate a full night’s sleep. We also really needed extra seating space in our living room, and I figure having something that rocks will probably be nice once we have a baby. We got it for super cheap at Fred Meyer. It was the last item–the display item–and on sale, so we ended up getting it for $200. Best impulse buy I’ve ever made. Not really a space saver, but definitely a major add to our living room. We can finally have company over and not expect people to sit on lawn furniture. Hoorah!

Another thing that we’ve done is try to turn our entry way into a mini-mud room. I’m really not a fan of shoes in the house. Plus, we have a dog who’s in and out for walks pretty frequently. We’ve got hangers for coats and jackets right by the front door, which is extremely convenient when you have to go in and out for walks. The two-piece set below is from Target. The top half is drawers. One contains Pippin’s leash, towel for cleaning muddy feet, and poop bags. One contains umbrellas and plastic reusable bags. The bottom half is shoe storage. We have another shoe rack that runs along the wall under the bar for extras and extra-large shoes. The welcome mat is in the wash here.

On Tuesday, we should be getting a frame for our bed (in case you were curious–our mattress and box springs currently sit directly on the floor in a super classay set-up that tells pretty much everyone who enters our bedroom exactly how close we still are to our college years), and with that, we’ll be moving a lot of stuff into rolling tubs that fit under the bed. That should free up a ton of cabinet, drawer and closet space so that we can make way for baby stuff. I’m hoping on Wednesday, we can get the furniture in our room moved and in a baby-friendly configuration.

Tomorrow night, my goal is to go through all of my costume jewelry and toss all the stuff that is in bad shape (which is a lot of it), give away the stuff that I don’t use anymore (which is a lot more of it), and find some way to organize the remainder. That should hopefully do away with three boxes currently occupying my closet that I rarely ever open.

I love having a clean house and being organized, and it feels so good finally getting some of these projects that I’ve been meaning to do–in some cases for years–under way. I’ll try to share more of the changes to our home as the baby deadline approaches. 🙂

Please note, we moved into our current place in April.
